This course gives you the skills and knowledge to operate a telehandler safely and efficiently on a farm, station, construction or building site.
Course Overview
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to conduct telescopic materials handler operations. It applies to those working in site-based roles.
The course covers all aspects of telehandler operations in the civil construction industry including:
- Conducting prestart and start-up checks prior to commencing operations
- Selecting equipment or attachments suitable to job requirements
- Assessing site and operating hazards
- Using load handling communication methods to communicate with dogman
- Attaching, securing, lifting, carrying and placing materials to meet job requirements
- Techniques to suit different work conditions
- Transporting machine and equipment safely between worksites
- Carrying out machine operator maintenance
- Cleaning up after operations.
The nationally recognised qualification RIIHAN309F Conduct telescopic materials handler operations, is delivered under a third-party agreement by V.E.T. Centre (QLD) on behalf of All States Training RTO #32577.
All States Training RTO #32577 is the Registered Training Organisation that issues certification upon successful completion of the accredited course.
Course Outcomes
It is expected that participants should acquire knowledge, skill and understanding of the following areas:
- Plan and prepare for telescopic materials handler operations
- Operate telescopic materials handler in line with established requirements
- Attach, secure, lift, carry and place materials to complete work activity
- Select, remove, fit and use attachments for a telescopic materials handler
- Relocate the telescopic materials handler
- Conduct housekeeping activities
Course Duration
This course takes from 1 day of face-to-face classroom and practical training/ assessment, depending on experience.
Training and assessment is conducted at the client’s premises, provided it has a suitable industry training facility and machine.

Each person will need to bring the following to each day of the course:
- Steel cap work boots
- Long sleeve high visibility shirt
- Long pants
- Sun protection
- Water bottle
- Lunch
Why do this course?
A telescopic materials handler or telehandler is an extremely versatile and useful machine, but it can pose serious risks if not used correctly.
If not operated correctly the telehandler can tip over or contact power lines, loads can slip off and attachments come loose, all of which can cause injuries and fatalities.
If you are using a telehandler at work, you need to be able to demonstrate that you have been properly trained and formally assessed.
This course is necessary for anyone who operates a telehandler as part of their work routines.
