Working with tractors is an inherently dangerous activity. The better you know how to operate and maintain a tractor, the safer and more productive you will be.
This course gives you the skills and knowledge to operate tractors and use attachments in civil construction. It covers planning and preparation for work; the conduct of pre-operational checks; the safe and effective operation of the tractor for a range of mandatory tasks; the fitting, use and removal of attachments; and operator maintenance activities.

Course Overview
RIIMPO315E – Conduct tractor operations
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to operate tractors and use attachments. It applies to those working in site-based roles.
During the course you will learn how to:
- Obtain, confirm and apply safety requirements
- Select appropriate tools and equipment required
- Identify and apply environmental protection requirements
- Conduct pre-operational machine checks
- Identify site hazards and minimise risks
- Operate tractor to work instructions
- Select, remove and fit attachments
- Use attachments in accordance with recommendations and design limits
- Relocate tractor
- Carry out machine operator maintenance
- Conduct inspection and fault finding
- Clear work area in accordance with the environmental management plan
- Clean, check, maintain and store plant, tools and equipment.
The nationally recognised qualification RIIMPO315E Conduct tractor operations, is delivered under a third-party agreement by V.E.T. Centre (QLD) on behalf of All States Training RTO #32577.
All States Training RTO #32577 is the Registered Training Organisation that issues certification upon successful completion of this accredited course.
Entry Requirements
Participants must be at least 16 years of age.
Course Outcomes
It is expected that participants should acquire knowledge, skill and understanding of the following areas:
- Plan and prepare for tractor operations
- Operate tractor in line with established requirements to complete work activity
- Select, remove, fit and use attachments for a tractor
- Relocate tractor
- Conduct housekeeping activities
Course Duration
This course takes between 1-2 days of face-to-face classroom and practical training/ assessment, depending on experience/ competence.

Each person will need to bring the following to each day of the course:
- Steel cap work boots
- Long sleeve shirt
- Long pants
- Sun protection
- Water bottle
- Lunch
Why do this course?
Operating tractors is a high-risk, potentially hazardous activity. Tractors are powerful machines used to make tasks easier and faster to complete. They are safe when operated properly but can be dangerous if used incorrectly.
The greatest risk of injury from tractors comes from rollovers, runovers and moving parts. They are heavy vehicles and can crush people.
- Tractors are top heavy which makes rollovers possible when they are on uneven and sloping ground.
- Some tractors can be started and will move without the driver in the seat or cab, putting the driver and others at risk of runovers.
- Tractors have many moving parts which can injure hands and feet and entangle clothing, causing serious injury or death.
This course is necessary for workers who operate a tractor in the civil construction and maintenance industries and for anyone who owns or operates a tractor on a regular basis.
