Course Overview
RIIVEH305F – Operate and maintain a four-wheel drive vehicle
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to operate and maintain a four wheel drive vehicle in the resources and infrastructure industries.
It applies to those working in supervisory and technical specialist roles. They generally work under minimal supervision to undertake a broad range of skilled applications in varied work contexts, using some discretion and judgement in selecting equipment, services or contingency measures.
It applies to operators who are required to check their vehicle daily, ensure the vehicle is safely loaded and use the 4WD modes.
The course covers:
- Key legislation required to operate and maintain a four wheel drive vehicle
- Key policies, procedures and documentation required to operate and maintain a four wheel drive vehicle, including:
- environmental and land management principles
- problem solving skills for operation and maintenance of a four wheel drive vehicle
- handover procedures
- technical information, including manufacturer manuals related to operation and maintenance of a four wheel drive vehicle
- operation of vehicles within specifications and limitations
- faults in vehicles and ancillary equipment
- driving techniques and handling characteristics of four-wheel drives in different terrain
- differences between optional four-wheel drive and constant four-wheel drive vehicles and their impacts on vehicle operation and capability
- tyre management principles
- Hazards associated with vehicle recovery, including slopes, pot holes, power lines, wet and/ or slippery conditions, mud, changes in terrain and obstacles, including tree branches and poles
- Travelling in convoy
- Area restrictions
- Basic four wheel drive maintenance procedures, including charging batteries, changing fuses and globes, jump-starting and battery safety
- Principles and techniques for identifying relevant hazards and emergencies
- Techniques for coordinating and communicating job activities with others.
The nationally recognised qualification RIIVEH305F Operate and maintain a four-wheel drive vehicle, is delivered under a third-party agreement by V.E.T. Centre (QLD) on behalf of All States Training RTO #32577.
All States Training RTO #32577 is the Registered Training Organisation that issues certification upon successful completion of this accredited course.
Entry Requirements
Participants must be at least 16 years of age.
Course Outcomes
It is expected that participants should acquire knowledge, skill and understanding of the following areas:
- Identify four-wheel drive specific terms, terminology and techniques
- Plan for minimal environmental impact
- Perform pre-departure checks
- Use four-wheel drive mode
- Coordinate and recover a vehicle
- Perform maintenance and minor repairs on four-wheel drive vehicles
Course Duration
This course takes 1 day of face-to-face classroom and practical training/ assessment.

The safe use of four wheel drive vehicles cannot be taken for granted, particularly when operating in remote or isolated areas.
Reduce the risks by learning the correct use of appropriate range (high or low range) gears and techniques to operate a four wheel drive vehicle through and over different and difficult terrain; the capabilities and limitations of a four wheel drive vehicle; basic maintenance and repair skills; and a mechanical understanding of a four wheel drive vehicle.
This course is designed for people specifically working in the resource, infrastructure and construction industries, but is also often undertaken by those working in other industries such as the gas, oil, energy and government sectors.
