Course Overview
TLID0020 – Shift materials safely using manual handling methods
This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to shift materials safely using manual handling methods. It includes assessing the risks associated with relocating the load, planning the relocation process and carrying out the relocation in accordance with the plan.
Work must be carried out in compliance with the relevant work health and safety regulations concerning the manual handling and movement of loads. Work is performed under some supervision generally within a team environment.
The course covers:
- Housekeeping standards and procedures
- Relevant WHS procedures and guidelines concerning the manual lifting and movement of loads
- Risks when manually lifting and handling materials and goods, and related precautions to control the risk, including:
- controlled actions on a movement during lifting
- distance over which load is to be shifted
- frequency of shifting operations
- load on the spine during lifting
- postures and positions during lifting
- rotation and side movement of the spine during lifting
- time allowed for shifting the load
- type, weight and position of the load
- work load
- site layout and obstacles
- workplace procedures and policies for manual handling
The nationally recognised qualification TLID0020 Shift materials safely using manual handling methods, is delivered under a third-party agreement by V.E.T. Centre (QLD), on behalf of All States Training RTO #32577.
All States Training RTO #32577 is the Registered Training Organisation that issues certification upon successful completion of the accredited course.
Course Outcomes
It is expected that participants should acquire knowledge, skill and understanding of the following areas:
- Assess risks associated with relocating load
- Plan load relocation
- Relocate load.
Course Duration
This course takes 1 day of face-to-face classroom and practical training/ assessment.

Manual handling is a potentially hazardous activity that carries the risk of injury.
According to Safe Work Australia, the potential risks of manual tasks include:
- sprains and strains of muscles, ligaments and tendons
- back injuries.
- joint and bone injuries or degeneration
- nerve injuries or compression (for example carpal tunnel syndrome)
- muscular and vascular disorders as a result of hand-arm vibration
- soft tissue injuries such as hernias
- chronic pain (pain that lasts longer than three months)
- acute pain (pain that lasts less than three months).
To control these risks, it is important to be properly trained and assessed in manual handling practices.
This course is necessary for workers who shift materials as part of their work routines.
