A backhoe/loader is a versatile machine for agricultural, landscaping and civil construction work. Backhoe/loaders are well suited to tasks such as digging, loading, trenching and backfilling, are used on many job sites and can navigate tough terrain. However, they can pose serious risks if not used correctly.
This course gives you the skills and knowledge to operate a backhoe/loader safely and efficiently on a farm, station, construction or building site.
Course Overview
RIIMPO319E – Conduct backhoe/loader operations
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to operate a backhoe/loader to load, distribute and place materials. It applies to those working in site-based roles.
The course covers all aspects of backhoe/loader operations in the civil construction industry including:
- Preparing for backhoe operations by understanding job requirements
- Carrying out start-up checks
- Developing safe techniques to suit different conditions
- Using lifting gear within safe working load requirements
- Selecting, fitting, testing, using and removing a variety of attachments
- Parking and securing of equipment
- Moving equipment safely between work areas
- Carrying out machinery operator maintenance
- Cleaning up after operations
The nationally recognised qualification RIIMPO319E Conduct backhoe/loader operations, is delivered under a third-party agreement by V.E.T. Centre (QLD), on behalf of All States Training RTO #32577.
All States Training RTO #32577 is the Registered Training Organisation that issues certification upon successful completion of the accredited course.
Course Outcomes
It is expected that participants should acquire knowledge, skill and understanding of the following areas:
- Plan and prepare for backhoe/loader operations
- Operate backhoe/loader in line with established requirements
- Load, carry and place materials to complete work activity
- Select, remove, fit and use attachments for a backhoe/loader
- Relocate the backhoe/loader
- Conduct housekeeping activities
Course Duration
This course takes from 1 day of face-to-face classroom and practical training/ assessment, depending on experience.
Training and assessment is conducted at the client’s premises, provided it has a suitable industry training facility and machine.

Each person will need to bring the following to each day of the course:
- Steel cap work boots
- Long sleeve high visibility shirt
- Long pants
- Sun protection
- Water bottle
- Lunch
Why do this course?
A backhoe/loader is an extremely versatile and useful machine, but it can pose serious risks if not used correctly.
If not operated correctly the backhoe/loader can overturn, loads can slip off and attachments can come loose, all of which can cause injuries and fatalities.
If you are using a backhoe/loader at work, you need to be able to demonstrate that you have been properly trained and formally assessed.
This course is necessary for anyone who operates a backhoe/loader as part of their work routines.
