Excavators are very useful machines for agriculture and civil construction work, known for their efficiency and ability to handle large amounts of material in a short amount of time. However, an excavator can pose serious risks if it is not used correctly.
This course gives you the skills and knowledge to operate an excavator safely and efficiently on a farm, station, construction or building site.
Course Overview
RIIMPO320F – Conduct civil construction excavator operations
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to conduct excavator operations to lift carry and place materials. It applies to those working in site-based roles.
The course covers all aspects of excavator operations in the civil construction industry including:
- Conducting prestart and start-up checks prior to commencing operations
- Interpreting work instructions
- Establishing weight of load and ensuring it is within safe operational limits of the machine
- Driving and manoeuvring the machine
- Techniques to suit different work conditions
- Selecting, removing, fitting and using excavator attachments
- Moving the excavator safely within and/or between work areas
- Carrying out machine operator maintenance
- Cleaning up after operations.
The nationally recognised qualification RIIMPO320F Conduct civil construction excavator operations is delivered under a third-party agreement by V.E.T. Centre (QLD) on behalf of All States Training RTO #32577.
All States Training RTO #32577 is the Registered Training Organisation that issues certification upon successful completion of the accredited course.
Course Outcomes
It is expected that participants should acquire knowledge, skill and understanding of the following areas:
- Plan and prepare for excavator operations
- Operate excavator in line with established requirements
- Lift, carry and place materials to complete work activity
- Select, remove, fit and use attachments for a excavator
- Relocate the excavator
- Conduct housekeeping activities
Course Duration
This course takes from 1 day of face-to-face classroom and practical training/ assessment, depending on experience.
Training and assessment is conducted at the client’s premises, provided it has a suitable industry training facility and machine.

Each person will need to bring the following to each day of the course:
- Steel cap work boots
- Long sleeve high visibility shirt
- Long pants
- Sun protection
- Water bottle
- Lunch
Why do this course?
An excavator is an extremely useful machine, but it can pose serious risks if not used correctly.
If not operated correctly the excavator can roll over or contact power lines, loads can dislodge, the bucket or bucket arm can strike or crush pedestrians and attachments can come loose, all of which can cause injuries and fatalities.
If you are using an excavator at work, you need to be able to demonstrate that you have been properly trained and formally assessed.
This course is necessary for anyone who operates an excavator as part of their work routines.
