Inspect and clean machinery, tools and equipment to preserve biosecurity – AHCBIO203
Also known as ‘Weed and Seed’ or ‘Washdown’, this course gives you the skills and knowledge required to inspect and clean machinery, tools and other equipment, including vehicles, of material that may contribute to the spread of biosecurity threats.
This course shows you how to identify some of the key bio-security threats facing your operations and equips supervisors, employees and contractors with the skills and knowledge to implement company specific hygiene policies and procedures. You will examine different areas on machinery and equipment, record any issues that pose a risk and dispose of waste and infected material or weeds.
Course Overview
AHCBIO203 – Inspect and clean machinery, tools and equipment to preserve biosecurity
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to inspect and clean machinery, tools and other equipment, including vehicles, of material that may contribute to the spread of biosecurity threats.
It applies to individuals working in a broad range of job contexts who undertake defined routine activities under supervision. They exercise limited autonomy within established and well known parameters, providing solutions to a limited range of predictable problems.
The course covers:
- Company specific weed hygiene procedures (if in place)
- State government legislation
- Introduction to potential contaminants
- Weed identification skills, covering restricted invasive plants and common weeds
- Potential contamination points on vehicles, machinery and equipment
- Inspection and clean down procedures
- Safety procedures
- Equipment to assist in inspection and cleaning
- Practical clean down and inspection exercises conducted in the field.
The nationally recognised qualification AHCBIO203 Inspect and clean machinery, tools and equipment to preserve biosecurity, is delivered under a third-party agreement by V.E.T. Centre (QLD) on behalf of All States Training RTO #32577.
All States Training RTO #32577 is the Registered Training Organisation that issues certification upon successful completion of the accredited course.
Course Outcomes

Course Duration
This course takes 1 day of face-to-face classroom and practical training.

Why do this course?
Invasive plants cost Queensland more than $600 million annually in lost production, land degradation and control costs. The spread of invasive plants threatens the state’s agricultural industries, environment and social amenity. One way in which invasive weeds are spread, is through poor vehicle and machinery cleanliness and maintenance.
Owners and operators of vehicles and machinery have a legal duty to take all reasonable steps to ensure that invasive plants do not spread. The best way to do this is by following clean/ wash down procedures to ensure that vehicles and machinery are as clean as practical of the seeds or other reproductive material of invasive plants.
This course is necessary for any individuals moving vehicles/ machinery, or who are responsible for inspecting and cleaning machinery that is being moved from one paddock, property or location to another.
A weed and seed wash and inspection can only be performed by a trained professional who has a nationally accredited Statement of Attainment for AHCBIO203.
