Quad bikes have many and varied uses. Their unique attributes make them a valuable resource in many industries, particularly on stations and farms. However, as with any vehicle, their safe use cannot be taken for granted. Quad bikes handle differently than other vehicles, such as motorbikes and cars. A collision or rollover can occur quickly, even during routine manoeuvres, if proper precautions are not taken.
This course gives you the basic skills and knowledge required to safely operate a quad bike, including undertaking pre-start checks and shut down procedures.

Course Overview
AHCMOM217 – Operate quad bikes
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to safely operate quad bikes including undertaking pre-start checks and shut down procedures. It applies to individuals who operate quad bikes to undertake routine work under general supervision with limited autonomy and accountability.
The course covers:
- Performing routine pre-operational checks and maintenance
- Matching, attaching and operating equipment as described in the manufacturer’s operator manual
- Recognising and controlling hazards and risks
- Safely operating quad bikes in a range of weather and terrain conditions
- Safely unloading, loading and securing quad bikes
- Monitoring and maintaining vehicle records.
The nationally recognised qualification AHCMOM217 Operate quad bikes, is delivered under a third-party agreement by V.E.T. Centre (QLD) on behalf of All States Training RTO #32577.
All States Training RTO #32577 is the Registered Training Organisation that issues certification upon successful completion of the accredited course.
Entry Requirements
Participants must be at least 16 years of age.
Course Outcomes
It is expected that participants should acquire knowledge, skill and understanding of the following areas:
- Prepare a quad bike for operation
- Operate a quad bike
- Complete quad bike operation
Course Duration
This course takes from 1 day of face-to-face classroom and practical training/ assessment, subject to experience.
What to bring on the day
Each person will need to bring the following:
- Steel cap work boots
- Long sleeve shirt
- Long pants
- Helmet
- Safety gloves
- Eye protection
- Water bottle
- Lunch
Why do this course?
Operating quad bikes is a high-risk, potentially hazardous activity. Quad bikes are not toys and handle differently than other vehicles. A collision or rollover can occur quickly, even during routine manoeuvres such as turning, driving on hills or over obstacles, if proper precautions are not taken.
There is growing concern in Australia over the number of deaths and serious injuries occurring in association with quad bike operation, both in the workplace and during recreational use.
According to Safe Work Australia, there were 61 quad bike deaths in Australia between 2018 and 2022. There is an average of 15 fatalities every year, with a further 1,400 serious injuries associated with quad bikes. Quad bikes are the leading cause of death on Australian farms.
This course is necessary for workers who use a quad bike as part of their daily work routines and for anyone who uses a quad bike for recreational purposes.
